Your Trusted Design-Build Partner in San Jose

Craftsmen's Guild is a family-owned design-build firm that has built and remodeled homes in San Jose and across Silicon Valley since 1988. Our architects, designers and builders work as one team, so the people who draw your home are the people who price it and build it. In San Jose that usually means one of three projects. The first is a ground-up custom home on an infill lot, the second a teardown and rebuild of an older house, and the third a whole-home remodel of a dated layout.

Choosing a builder in San Jose comes down to proof. Craftsmen's Guild holds a 4.8-star Diamond Certified rating drawn from 42 independently verified customer surveys, backed by 15 consecutive years of certification. We hold California license #507159, belong to the National Kitchen & Bath Association, and won the City of Cupertino's 2024 Best of Design/Build award.

Our best-known San Jose project is in Willow Glen. The Iconic Remodel, a historic home on Cherry Garden Lane, achieved the highest price per square foot sold in Willow Glen in 2023. A development team bought it as an investment, so the work was judged on what the market paid for it. We rebuilt the plan around one great room under 14-foot vaulted ceilings. The old formal living room became a guest suite, the kitchen gained a walk-in pantry, and the primary suite was rebuilt. That is the standard we bring to every San Jose home, whether the brief is a remodel or a new build.

San Jose is a large city with very different housing stock from one neighborhood to the next. Willow Glen, Rose Garden and Naglee Park hold older homes on established streets, where the question is often whether to remodel or rebuild. Almaden Valley and the Evergreen foothills bring larger lots and sloped sites, where grading, drainage and access shape the design. Many of the city's homes were built decades ago and no longer suit modern family life. That is why many owners build new rather than compete for a resale house that still needs work.

Budget comes first. Upscale custom construction in the Bay Area typically runs $500 to $750 per square foot, and true luxury finishes run $900 to $1,200 or more (White Palace Construction 2025; Custom Home 2026). Site work, from demolition and grading to utility connections, commonly adds $150,000 to $400,000 (Custom Home 2026). A custom home typically takes 12 to 24 months from design through construction (NAHB 2025). Because one team designs and builds, we price the house while it is being drawn, so the plans you approve match a number we can build to.

Permits for new homes and major remodels run through the City of San Jose's Department of Planning, Building and Code Enforcement. Every new home must also meet California's energy code, seismic standards and fire sprinkler requirement. We prepare the zoning review, engineering and permit submittals in house, before construction begins. A permit set that is right the first time is the fastest way through review.

Before you sign with any builder in San Jose, ask the same questions of each one. Which San Jose projects have you completed, and can I speak with those owners? Who will lead the design, and will that person stay on the project through construction? How do you prepare permit submittals, and how close have your recent timelines come to plan? Who is my day-to-day contact during construction? What results can you point to, such as resale prices or awards? Strong answers come with names, addresses and numbers. Vague answers about general Bay Area experience are a warning sign.

We build ground-up custom homes, teardown rebuilds, whole-home remodels and additions, and ADUs as part of a larger property plan. Start with a complimentary consultation: we will walk your site, review what your lot allows, and give you an honest view of cost and timeline before any design work begins.
