Your Trusted Design-Build Partner in Los Altos

Craftsmen's Guild designs and builds custom homes in Los Altos and Los Altos Hills. We are a family-owned design-build firm founded in 1988, so the architects, designers and builders on your project work as one team and answer to one schedule. Most of our Los Altos work is one of three things: a new home on an existing lot, a teardown and rebuild of an older ranch house, or a whole-home remodel and expansion.

Our Los Altos projects are the best evidence of how we build. Luxury Modern Living is a single-story custom home on Miramonte Avenue, finished in 2022. The plan is organized around the creekside oaks at the back of the lot, with a stacking panoramic door that opens the living space completely to the garden. It sold above asking against multiple offers. Our Los Altos Expansion and Remodel set a record resale value for its neighborhood. In Los Altos Hills, our ranch house renovation reworked an older home for the way a family lives now.

Choosing a builder comes down to proof. Craftsmen's Guild holds a 4.8-star Diamond Certified rating drawn from 42 independently verified customer surveys, backed by 15 consecutive years of certification. We hold California license #507159, belong to the National Kitchen & Bath Association, and won the City of Cupertino's 2024 Best of Design/Build award.

Many Los Altos owners start with one question: remodel or rebuild? Much of the city's housing is older single-story stock on generous lots, and the land is usually worth far more than the house. When the structure, layout and systems all need major work, a new home often costs less per finished square foot than a remodel that fights the original plan. We price both options early, so the decision rests on numbers, not guesswork.

Budget is the next conversation. Upscale custom construction in the Bay Area typically runs $500 to $750 per square foot, and Peninsula and hillside enclaves $600 to $800 or more (White Palace Construction 2025). True luxury finishes run $900 to $1,200 or more (Custom Home 2026). Site work, from demolition and grading to utilities, commonly adds $150,000 to $400,000 (Custom Home 2026). A custom home typically takes 12 to 24 months from design through construction (NAHB 2025).

Building in Los Altos also means working through the city's planning and building review, and in Los Altos Hills the town's own rules on lot coverage, grading and hillside development. Every new home in California must meet the state energy code, seismic standards and the fire sprinkler requirement. We handle zoning review, engineering and permit submittals in house, before construction starts, because a complete permit set is the fastest way through review.

If resale value matters to you, a few choices pay back. Start with the right lot and understand its zoning limits before you buy. Plan for accessibility, with a main-floor suite that works for aging in place or multigenerational living. Build an energy-efficient, all-electric-ready home, which lowers running costs and appeals to the next buyer. And put money into the details buyers notice for decades: millwork, windows and the kitchen.

Start with a complimentary consultation. We will walk your lot, review what Los Altos or Los Altos Hills allows on it, and give you an honest view of cost and timeline before any design work begins.

This approach fosters collaboration between designers and builders, leading to more efficient, cohesive projects and often results in quicker completion times and cost savings.
Our custom home design process begins with deep listening, then progresses through schematic design, design development, permitting, and finally a fully detailed construction set, all under one roof.
